Tailored Suits & Leeds Yorkshire

A story of over 150 years and counting …

Where it all began

Yorkshire, located at the heart of the nation, can also be considered the heart of suit tailoring. For over the last century, the main industry of Leeds was geared around all that is to do with tailoring, including but not limited to cloth manufacturing. There were over 600 woollen and worsted mills dotted all over the Yorkshire Pennines and Moors at one time and the soft water led to the spinning of luxurious and comfortable fabrics that are still world-renowned to this day. Today, we are fortunate to still have the best cloth mills in the world that have the years of experience behind them to produce ever-higher quality fabrics.

Suiting for the Empire

From the beginning of the 1900’s until towards the end of the 20th century, Leeds was the suit epicentre for the U.K. and the British Empire, with nearly two thirds of all suits made and sold for men within the city area of Leeds itself.  The city was responsible for creating over 50 thousand suits per year. The word Bespoke was a term introduced in London to denote personalisation to each persons wishes. The 2 Piece Suit, on the other hand, was the term introduced in Leeds to denote the suit that nearly everyone in the UK and beyond was wearing on an almost daily basis.  Carl Stuart Tailors is proud to continue the evolution of the suit tradition by creating the British Made to Measure suit.

Carrying the Torch into the Future

Carl Stuart Tailors source over 95% of its cloths from the Yorkshire Mills that have been operating for over 120 years. Retaining this British history and experience whilst still keeping up-to-date with the latest trends in clothing styles is what we, The Yorkshire Tailors, do with great pride. Our Leeds Tailoring flagship shop location is the representation of this heritage and we are proud to invite you to experience and enjoy the craftsmanship of all our Made to Measure and Bespoke suiting & clothing options.
