“I’ve been customer of Carl Stuart since the 1980s when I got my first suit for my first job after leaving school. Back then it meant a trip to see Walter in Ossett and was quite an experience for a young guy. I had suits made for my wedding and they lasted way longer than the marriage!

A wealth of knowledge combined with respect, fun and enthusiasm. A trip to my tailor nowadays is a good day. The quality and value are first class and you know you’re looking good when you get an appreciative nod as I did the last time I walked down Savile Row wearing a suit from Carl Stuart. Thank you all, you make me look far better than I actually am.“ -Rob

The Art of Tailoring in the Heart of Yorkshire

Carl Stuart’s origins began in 1929 as an Ossett based tailoring company under Master Tailor Harold Leighton. In 1963, Walter Grimes (pictured right) who had been working at Leightons, took over the running of the company. As Walter was not one to vie for the limelight, he selected “Carl Stuart” as the new company name, after a friend of his and because he liked the sound of it.  Walter soon became one of the most influential and talented Master Tailors in Yorkshire and very highly regarded in the tailoring profession throughout the whole of the UK. Seeing a change in modern habits and dressing for work post WWII, Walter recognised a need and created the industry we know in the UK of Made to Measure suiting. Carl Stuart Tailoring was born.

We are one of the few remaining truly bespoke tailoring businesses in the UK, with all construction and alterations done in our factory and shops in West Yorkshire. In building a reputation for quality and excellence over this long period of time, many of our clients and team have remained loyal to us throughout. Indeed some members of our tailoring team have been with the company since Walter’s days at the helm and use the knowledge and skill he passed on to them in their craft each and every day.
